Marie Curie Charity Tennis Tournament

We had our first ever Marie Curie Charity Tennis Tournament event here at The Park Club last Saturday and we are pleased to say that it was a roaring success!

The day got off to a rainy, dreary start but that didn’t put off our eager tennis champs! A total of 22 adults and 23 juniors turned up for the event and luckily, the ominous grey clouds moved off early on, leaving us with several rain-free, tennis-playing, hours of fun.

For comical effect we asked players to come along wearing some form of crazy dress-up clothing or wigs - wigs proved the popular choice! A colourful, amusing array were worn by both adults and juniors with the juniors really getting into the swing of it, many wearing wigs of all shapes, colours and sizes!

Following several doubles matches, all oozing with energy and talent, we reached the Finals! In the Juniors Final, Yellows group, brothers Thomas and Lucas Cury faced Gabriel O’Mara and Sonny Pilgrim. The formidable brotherly duo triumphed with a final score of 3-2. Coach Shane suggested that the bright colours of the Cury boys’ wigs may have distracted their opponents so much so that they never stood a chance! Top marks for effort boys! In the Juniors Orange group, the winners were Finlay Martin and Dylan Taylor. The runners-up were Max Keenleyside and Sebastian Clifton. A fantastic effort was put in by all.

In the Adults group, Fiona Hamilton-Fairley and Vicky Harvey narrowly made it to the final ahead of Deborah Sheppard and Josi Marshall but alas, their winning streak was not to last. They faced the undefeated Amita Cunningham and Chris Wilcox and it was this champion duo that took the winners’ title. Well done guys!

Following the success of this year’s event we intend to host a bigger, better, GIANT event next year. There will be lots of fun and excitement, even an underwater tennis event! Watch this space! A final thanks to all who participated and also to Shane Hurst from The Park Club and Neris Johnson from Marie Curie for coordinating the event.
