Marie Curie Tournament Champions - 10 June '11
Last Friday, 10 June, saw our 1st annual Marie Curie Charity Tennis Tournament. Despite a rain soaked morning we did commence play as scheduled and only came off when the rain got too heavy to continue just before 11am. With the weather refusing to break it was decided to take an early lunch in an attempt to get some extra matches in during the afternoon session before the semi finals and final.
With a break in the rain and a revised format we were back out shortly after 1pm. With all 38 players back on the courts and the rain at bay we were optimistic that the tournament would be played out to the final. Players spent the next hour ploughing into their matches before the rain returned and hindered play once more. By 2pm the semi final places had been decided.
The 4 pairs that qualified for the semis included grandmother and grandson pairing Vicky Harvey and George Murphy, Alison Martin and Paul Stokes, Sharon Stewart and Martin Lovick and Kate Chancellor and Anthony Dalton. With rain imminent once more the semi finals were played and Vicky and George triumphed over Sharon and Martin whilst Kate and Anthony were victorious over Alison and Paul. Facing up in the rain Vicky and George managed to take the title in a rain soaked match, thus taking our 1st Marie Curie Charity Tournament Title.
Congratulations to all that attended on the day and helped The Park Club to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. It was a fantastic day despite the showers. Here’s to better weather next year!
