Ashtanga is a system of yoga popularised by Pattabhi Jois in the 1970s. It's a vigorous, energetic form, involving synchronizing your breathing with a continuous set series of poses flowing from one to another. Each movement is combined with an inhale or an exhale and poses are held for a certain number of breaths. There are six series of poses and progression is dependent upon mastering each one in order.
The benefits include improved circulation, stamina, strength and flexibility, as well as providing a great cardio-workout.
Ashtanga Yoga is a challenging form of yoga and is therefore not recommended for absolute beginners, we believe that here at The Park Club, near Chiswick, it's a good idea to get a feel for yoga first by taking a general class before trying Ashtanga Yoga.
